Genesee County Humane Society is named under the Humane Society of Genesee County. In 1926, Mr. Jonathan E. Burroughs and his colleagues opened a shelter without walls. Here, volunteer's cared for homeless animals. Prior to 1961, animals in need were humanely cared for in temporary shelters until personal interest, energy and philanthropy led to the purchase of the first building. Continued demands for Humane Society programs created the need for the facility to expand further in 1968 and ultimately to occupy a new and modern facility in 1993.

The Humane Society of Genesee County mission is to focus the overpopulation and care of companion animals. This includes dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Programs and services offered by the Humane Society of Genesee County are as follows: Golden Friendship, Pet Therapy, Pet Loss Support, Foster Care, Volunteering, Surredering a pet, and Humane Education. Yearly, 7,000 animals are cared for. Cats, dogs , even rabbits and other small animals are available for adoption.
